EPL on Citi: Progress has been made over new Liverpool deal- Van Dijk

Captain Virgil van Dijk says there has been "progress" in contract talks with Liverpool. The 33-year-old defender's contract ends this season. In March, he mentioned he had "no idea" about his future at Anfield.

Van Dijk is one of three key players nearing the end of their deals. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also have not signed extensions. After Liverpool's 3-2 loss to Fulham, Van Dijk felt more positive about staying.

"There is progress, yeah," said the Netherlands captain. He added, "I don’t know if I’ll stay; we’ll see." He emphasized that these are internal discussions.

"I love the club and the fans," he continued. "They were there for us again, and we wanted to reward them." He hopes fans will support them again on Sunday against West Ham United.

Despite the defeat, Liverpool holds an 11-point lead in the Premier League. This loss was only their second league defeat this season and their first in 26 matches.

"It was a poor day at the office for all of us," Van Dijk stated. He noted that individual mistakes should have been handled better and called it unacceptable as a team.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2018 for £75 million. He has scored 26 goals in 323 appearances for the Reds. He played a crucial role as they won multiple trophies under Jurgen Klopp, including the Premier League and Champions League.
