FIFA Women’s Women’s World Cup teams increased to 48 teams from 2031 Edition

FIFA has announced an increase in Women’s World Cup teams. Starting in 2031, the number will rise from 32 to 48. This change mirrors the men’s tournament expansion in 2026.

The new format will feature 12 groups of four teams. Previously, there were eight groups of four. The total matches will increase from 64 to 104, extending the event by one week.

Hosting requirements for 2031 and 2035 have been updated. Stadiums, training facilities, and accommodations must support more teams and fans. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized that this is about growing women’s football globally.

Infantino reflected on the success of Australia-New Zealand 2023. Every confederation had at least one match win. Five confederations advanced to the knockout stage.

He stated that the tournament set a new standard for competitiveness. The expansion aims to maintain momentum and grow women's football worldwide. It represents a significant investment in the future of women's sports.

With record viewership and increased competition in 2023, FIFA shows commitment to equality and growth in women’s football.
