FIFA expands Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams effective 2031.

The FIFA Council has made an important decision. After consulting with confederations and stakeholders, they will expand the FIFA Women’s World Cup™. The number of teams will increase from 32 to 48 starting in 2031.

This change aims to broaden representation in women’s football. More nations and players will have access to elite competition. It will also encourage investment in women's football worldwide.

The new format will feature 12 groups. This means the total number of matches will rise from 64 to 104. The tournament will also be extended by one week. Hosting requirements for the 2031 and 2035 editions have been updated.

FIFA plans to engage further with stakeholders for feedback on this decision.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, “This is not just about adding teams.” He emphasized that more member associations can develop their women’s football structures.

Infantino noted that the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 set a new standard. Teams from all confederations won at least one game, and five reached the knockout stage. This decision helps maintain momentum for growing women’s football globally.

Additionally, the FIFA Council approved a strategy for Afghan women’s football. This includes establishing an Afghan women's refugee team (AWRT). FIFA aims to organize its operations as soon as possible.

“This is a landmark initiative,” said Infantino. He reaffirmed FIFA's commitment to giving every girl the chance to play football.
