Football will be safe for all stakeholders - Sports Minister Kofi Adams assures

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has made an important promise. He assured that football in Ghana will be safe for everyone involved.

This statement was made during the 24th anniversary of the May 9 Disaster in Accra. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 127 football fans. Many others were injured in a stampede during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001.

In his speech, Mr. Adams emphasized safety for all football fans. “For all of us who love our football, we want to continue to encourage that football will be safer," he said.

He mentioned that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is working on new rules. They have visited various stadiums used for the Premier League. Some stadiums did not meet safety standards and were suspended.

Mr. Adams promised ongoing improvements to stadium security. He wants to prevent tragedies like May 9 and recent incidents from happening again.

The event was attended by GFA president Kurt Okraku, National Sports Authority boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and officials from both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
