Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has dismissed claims that cultural differences hinder players born abroad from performing well for the Black Stars.
Criticism has been directed at Spain-born Iñaki Williams and London-born Antoine Semenyo for underwhelming performances despite their club success. Williams, for instance, has scored only one goal for Ghana since his 2022 debut.
Essien, speaking on Sporty FM, rejected the notion, calling it unfair to blame cultural factors for players' struggles. He criticized the tendency to invite such players and then question their commitment when results falter.
While criticism may deter some dual-nationality players, Ghana continues to attract talent with ties to the country.
Essien, a decorated footballer with Premier League titles and a Champions League win, remains a strong voice in Ghanaian football discussions.
