Jamie Carragher has admitted to being "clumsy" in his comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after facing backlash.
The Liverpool legend suggested that AFCON was not a “major tournament” while discussing Mohamed Salah's Ballon d'Or chances, arguing that Salah's bid could be affected by not playing in a major tournament.
His remarks were criticized, with many pointing out AFCON's significance as Africa's premier competition.
Carragher later clarified that his intention was to explain the historical bias in Ballon d'Or voting, where international tournaments outside the World Cup and UEFA Euros have had less influence.
He expressed regret over his language and reiterated his support for Salah’s Ballon d’Or campaign.
