GBA confirms death of Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju collapsed during an international bout at the Bel 7star Energy Drink Professional Boxing League. He died 30 minutes after arriving at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. This incident occurred during Week 15 of the league last Saturday, shocking the boxing community.

Olanrewaju was a light heavyweight fighter. He faced Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu in an eight-round contest organized by Imax Boxing Promotions. He dominated the early rounds but suddenly leaned on the ropes in Round 3 without receiving any punches.

Referee Richard Amevi stopped the fight and called for medical assistance. Ringside physicians and paramedics provided first aid before transporting him to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

GBA President Abraham Kotei Neequaye coordinated with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and local authorities. The incident was reported to Korle Bu Police Station, and arrangements were made to move his body to the mortuary for preservation. Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofu Adams, was also informed.

Olanrewaju had been medically certified by NBBC before the fight. His professional record included 23 fights: 13 wins (12 by knockout) and 8 losses. The GBA acknowledged his potential in boxing, noting he had been in control before collapsing.

The GBA expressed condolences to NBBC and boxing fans worldwide. They reflected on past tragedies in boxing and emphasized its unpredictability. An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death.

The boxing community mourns this loss, with GBA stating: “May Gabriel Oluwasegun's soul rest in peace.”
