The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. He died after an international light heavyweight match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 30, 2025.
Olanrewaju seemed to be winning the fight. However, he collapsed in the third round without being hit. The referee stopped the match, and medical personnel tried to resuscitate him. They transported him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.
Olanrewaju had a professional record of 23 fights, with 13 wins. He was declared medically fit before the match.
GBA president Abraham Kotei Neequaye has taken action following this incident. He notified the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control and local authorities. An official cause of death is pending an autopsy.
In their statement, the GBA expressed condolences to the Nigerian Boxing Board and the boxing community. They mourned the loss of a promising boxer.
