Richard Kofi Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has a message for National Federations. He urged them to prioritize athletes in all their activities. He stated, “You are a federation president or secretary because of your athletes. Without them, there would be no federation to lead.”
Mr. Akpokavie spoke at the opening of a two-day retreat for National Federations in Koforidua. He highlighted the GOC’s commitment to creating an effective Athletes Commission. This commission aims to amplify athletes’ voices.
He also mentioned that the GOC will support training programs for athletes. They will provide grants and scholarships to prepare athletes for competitions. The goal is to foster a high-performance, athlete-centered environment.
The President called on National Federations to work with the GOC. Together, they can leave a legacy for Ghana's sports community. He wants corporate institutions to recognize the GOC before they seek support.
During his presentation on the SWOT analysis of the GOC, he explained its importance. This analysis helps federations understand how to rebrand sports in Ghana. It aims to improve their image and that of the GOC.
Mr. Akpokavie noted that GOC’s recognition by international bodies is a strength. Achievements in the Olympics and strong leadership also contribute positively. However, he identified weaknesses like poor talent identification and governance issues.
For opportunities, he pointed out untapped corporate partnerships and digital engagement potential. Youth demographics present long-term growth prospects for sports in Ghana.
However, he warned about threats such as political interference and low public trust due to past conflicts. Additionally, many athletes are migrating abroad due to lack of support.
He encouraged federation heads to implement what they learned at the retreat. Mr. Akpokavie's doors are open for further discussions on mutual growth and development.
