GPL 2024/25: Asante Kotoko relinquish top spot after heavy defeat to Accra Lions

Asante Kotoko lost their top spot in the Ghana Premier League. They suffered a 3-0 defeat to Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko aimed to win after drawing with Bechem United. They wanted to extend their lead in the league. However, the Lions had different plans.

Gildas Jacob scored first for the Lions. He reacted quickly after a strike hit the post. This goal came just before the 20th minute.

The Lions doubled their lead with a counterattack. Yao Sopkoli finished it five minutes before half-time.

David Akintunde sealed the victory with another goal. He surged into the box and struck home.

Kwame Opoku tried to reduce the deficit but failed. His shot was saved by goalkeeper Daniel Afful.

This was Kotoko's heaviest defeat of the season. They now sit third in the league with 47 points. They hope to bounce back against Nations FC, who are second.

The win is crucial for Accra Lions as they fight relegation. They currently sit 14th with 29 points. Their next match is against Heart of Lions at Kpando Sports Stadium.
