Ghana Basketball: If we are not ready to spend, we won’t make it up there- Dr. Opoku-Antwi

Dr. Eric Opoku-Antwi is the Co-Founder of Spintex Knights Basketball Club. He recently discussed Ghana's basketball future. He believes the country needs to invest more in the sport.

Ghanaian teams are not present in the later stages of the NBA-backed Basketball Africa League (BAL). Dr. Opoku-Antwi noted that basketball is expensive and requires more funding. This investment is crucial for Ghana to reach its potential.

The Spintex Knights competed in the BAL for the first time this year. They became the first Ghanaian team to advance beyond the preliminary round but were eliminated afterward.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Dr. Opoku-Antwi spoke about their upcoming match against Nungua Coldstore on May 17 at El-Wak Stadium. He emphasized that basketball requires significant financial resources.

He stated, “It’s an expensive sport. If you don’t have money and resources, sit home.” He highlighted that BAL teams sign top players for visibility. Without spending, he believes Ghana cannot succeed in basketball.

The Knights are back-to-back champions of Accra Basketball League Men’s Division I.
