Ghana’s Black Rockets storm into finals of 2025 African Youth Boxing championship

Ghana’s national youth boxing team, the Black Rockets, is shining at the 2025 African Youth Boxing Championship in Conakry, Guinea.

All three representatives—Gideon Pappoe, George Dowuona, and Mathias Ashitey—will fight for gold on Sunday, May 25. This event could be a defining moment for Ghanaian youth boxing.

The championship runs from May 16 to 26. It features some of Africa’s most promising young fighters. However, Ghana’s trio has emerged as a dominant force under head coach Joseph Martey.

The team left Accra on May 17 with high hopes. Now they are close to achieving continental glory.

Seventeen-year-old Gideon Pappoe competes in the middleweight division (75kg). He won his opening bout with a 5-0 unanimous decision and received a walkover in the semi-finals. His skill and composure make him a top contender for gold.

Eighteen-year-old George Dowuona fights in the bantamweight category (54kg). He advanced to the final after winning his match by Round 1 RSC (Referee Stopped Contest). Known for his aggression, Dowuona is one of the tournament's standout boxers.

Seventeen-year-old Mathias Ashitey competes in the flyweight division (52kg). He outclassed a tough Guinean opponent with a clean 5-0 unanimous decision. His sharp reflexes and calm demeanor have earned him widespread admiration.

The Black Rockets’ success marks a new chapter for Ghanaian boxing. The historic Bukom neighborhood has produced eight world champions.

Their journey to the finals reflects renewed efforts by the Ghana Boxing Federation and Ministry of Sports. Programs like the upcoming Amateur Boxing League aim to nurture more talent in youth boxing.
