‘Ghana sprinting has reached crescendo of the world’ – Fuseini hails Saminu’s 100m world-leading run

The President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini, is optimistic about sprinting in Ghana. He believes Abdul-Rasheed Saminu’s world-leading time in the 100m shows that sprinting has peaked.

Saminu, a student at the University of South Florida, ran 9.86 seconds on Friday. This was at the NCAA East Prelims and secured his spot at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

He broke the national record of 9.90 seconds set by Benjamin Azamati in 2022. Saminu improved the record by 0.04 seconds.

Fuseini expressed pride in Saminu's achievement. “We are very happy he has made it this far,” he said. “His success brings us excitement as a federation.”

He noted that Saminu is not alone this season. Azamati also recorded a time of 9.98 seconds.

“This indicates that Ghana sprinting has reached new heights,” Fuseini added. He expects more athletes to qualify for the World Championship soon.

This would enhance Ghana's chances for medals at the event. After missing out on the World Relays earlier this month in China, Saminu is crucial for Ghana's track medal hopes in Tokyo later this year.
