AJ Auxerre defender Gideon Mensah captained the Black Stars for the first time. This happened during Ghana's 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the 2025 Unity Cup.
The 26-year-old received the armband after Jordan Ayew was substituted. Ayew had scored the first goal and assisted two others before leaving in the 60th minute. Mensah took on leadership as several senior players were absent due to injuries.
Ghana finished third in the 2025 Unity Cup held in London. They secured this position with a strong 4-0 victory at Gtech Community Stadium.
The match started explosively, with Ayew scoring just five minutes in. He hit a powerful shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring. Six minutes later, Razak Simpson doubled Ghana's lead with a header from an Ayew corner kick.
Ghana continued their dominance when Mohammed Fuseini Gadafi scored just before halftime. He found the net following a great team build-up play. Eight minutes into the second half, Lawrence Agyekum added another goal for Ghana, striking through goalkeeper Jabari Hillaire’s legs.
Mensah has played 32 times for Ghana since his debut in 2019 during an AFCON Qualifier against South Africa.
