The new Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, spoke about upgrading sports stadiums. He said the government is committed to improving the Cape Coast and Essipong Sports Stadiums. This upgrade aims to meet CAF and FIFA standards for international competitions.
In an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim on Original TV, he discussed infrastructure issues at both stadiums. He stated that urgent repairs are needed. "We have a lot of work to do," he said. The Cape Coast stadium is in poor condition, especially the grass. However, efforts are underway to fix it.
Ampofo Ankrah mentioned some progress at Essipong Sports Stadium. Roofing work has advanced, but challenges remain. "We can upgrade the Essipong stadium, but we need to invest a lot of money," he explained. He visited last month and noted that while the roof looks good, there is no electricity available. Additionally, land encroachment near the stadium poses problems.
His comments come amid concerns about Ghana's sports infrastructure readiness for major events. Both Cape Coast and Essipong have hosted significant matches before but now require repairs. Ampofo Ankrah stressed the government's commitment to restoring these stadiums to international standards. However, he acknowledged that this will take time and substantial financial resources.
