Ghanaian artist Guru shared his experience as SRC President at the University of Ghana. He discussed the challenges he faces as a celebrity student on campus.
"It is very difficult being an SRC president at the University of Ghana," he said. "We dislike projecting our celebrity lifestyle onto students." He emphasized that there is a gap between performing and attending classes.
To avoid attention, Guru often wore a nose mask and hoodie to class. "I don’t want to be seen," he explained. "With that, you can't focus." However, people still recognized him despite his efforts.
He recalled feeling uncomfortable when he first started attending classes. "In the beginning, it was very difficult," he noted. Students would wonder who he was, and some pretended not to recognize him.
When asked about answering questions in class, Guru explained that lecturers do not force participation. "At Legon, they won’t make you answer questions," he said. Building rapport with students is important for engagement.
Guru managed to keep a low profile even among his lecturers. "Some didn’t know I was a student," he stated. He maintained his disguise with a nose mask and hoodie throughout unexpected situations.
Despite these challenges, he found ways to cope academically. "I identified some nerds for help when I struggled," he shared. He worked hard to maintain good grades and keep his GPA intact.
Guru's experience as SRC President highlights the unique challenges faced by celebrity students. Despite difficulties, he navigated campus life with determination and succeeded academically.
