Winfried Schäfer is the new Technical Director of the Black Stars. He is confident about the team's future performance.
Schäfer took this role after Ghana did not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The Black Stars finished last in Group F, earning only three points.
In an interview with Sächsische Zeitung, Schäfer shared his optimism. He said, “The association president asked me to support Otto Addo. My goal is to create a spirit of optimism and modernize football.”
He added, “I'm not a guru, but my experience in Cameroon has given me good insight.”
Schäfer noted that they quickly re-established unity within the team. They won their first two games and are on a good path to qualification.
He mentioned that implementing projects in Ghana will be challenging. He is still looking for international partners to support these efforts but remains optimistic.
The Black Stars will regroup later this month for a four-nation tournament in the UK. This tournament is called the Unity Cup and includes Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Additionally, the Black Stars will resume their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in September 2025.
