I don’t expect Nigerians to attack any Ghanaian Boxer following death of Gabriel Oluwasegun – Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, spoke about recent events. He aims to prevent the death of a Nigerian boxer from harming relations between Ghana and Nigeria.

In an interview on April 1, 2025, with Sporty FM, he addressed concerns. He dismissed reports of potential tensions for future boxing events in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of unity and respect between both countries’ boxing communities.

The Minister responded to worries that the Nigerian community might feel resentment. This concern arose after Olanrewaju's death following a match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu.

Olanrewaju died at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), led by Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, requested an autopsy report from the Ghana Boxing Authority on March 31.

This incident has raised discussions about athlete safety. It also highlights the competitive history between Ghana and Nigeria in sports, especially boxing. Both nations have produced world-class talent and share a longstanding rivalry.
