Kumasi Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has strong views on goalkeepers. He opposes the trend of ball-playing goalkeepers.
Zito believes this stance has improved Kotoko’s goalkeeping since he took over. He also claims to have a talent for developing goalkeepers.
Earlier this season, while coaching Dreams FC, Zito criticized goalkeeper Gidios Aseako. Aseako made errors while trying to play out from the back. This led to a draw against Kpando Heart of Lions.
After Kotoko's 4-1 win over Dreams FC, Zito revisited the topic in an interview. He stated, “I have knowledge in coaching goalkeepers.” He mentioned coaching Felix Annan and Philemon McCarthy without specific goalkeeper coaches.
Zito expressed his dislike for the "Onana issue" in goalkeeping. He noted that local fields are not like those in Europe. Goalkeepers are crucial as they are both the last line of defense and the first line of attack.
He emphasized that Kotoko's goalkeeper coach Joe Baah works with them daily. This consistent training is key to their improvement.
