I’m hoping racism will end in football, says ex-Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari

Former Ghana international Sulley Muntari hopes racism in football will eventually end.

Recalling his time in Italy’s Serie A, he highlighted a 2017 incident with Pescara against Cagliari, where he was racially abused but received a yellow card for reporting it, leading him to walk off the pitch. Muntari criticized Italy’s weak response to racism, contrasting it with England’s stricter measures.

He advised players to stay focused and not let abuse affect them, admitting he would have reacted differently in hindsight.

Muntari held the record for most Serie A appearances by an African player (270) until Kwadwo Asamoah surpassed it in 2021. He also played for Ghana in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups.
