Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to injury. He is hopeful about being fit for his French Open title defense.
The Spanish world number three injured his hamstring and groin. This happened during the second set of Sunday’s Barcelona Open final.
Alcaraz said, "In a week or two I shall return to training." He added that he will take it step by step.
"I couldn't practice the entire week," he explained. "I needed to listen to my body and make the right decision."
He hopes to be ready for the French Open but does not want to rush things.
Alcaraz is a two-time champion in Madrid. He also won the Monte Carlo Masters in April.
During the Barcelona final against Holger Rune, Alcaraz left the court for treatment. He resumed playing but lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Alcaraz plans to travel to Rome for the Italian Open on May 6. The French Open starts on May 25.
Even if he cannot play before Roland Garros, Alcaraz feels confident.
"The tennis I've played recently has been great," he said.
"Mentally, I think I'm strong enough to play well again."
He added that this injury will not affect his confidence.
"If I don't play in Rome or any tournaments before Roland Garros, I’m okay with that," he stated.
"I know my level and what I need to do to play good tennis."
