It’s a Gradual Process – Sheikh Tophic defends limited local players in Black Stars

Veteran sports journalist Sheikh Tophic Sienu is a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communication Team. He emphasized the need for patience and strategic planning when integrating players from the Ghana Premier League (GPL) into the Black Stars.

Before Ghana's Unity Cup match against Nigeria, he addressed concerns about home-based players. Fans and pundits have noted their limited presence in Black Stars call-ups, especially during important matches.

Tophic said, “For GPL supporters, it’s understandable to want more players. However, this is a transitional plan. You can’t bring 10 or 15 players directly from the local league. It’s a gradual process.” He urged fans to give the coach time to build his desired team.

He acknowledged that while the GPL produces talented players, bridging local football with international competition requires more than just talent.

He pointed out successful transitions of players like Afriyie Barnieh and Danlad Ibrahim. These players moved through U-20, U-23, and CHAN teams before receiving senior call-ups.

Tophic also called for a stronger development pipeline for GPL players. This would provide them with opportunities to grow and be monitored through national team systems.
