Italy in 'difficult moment' after Norway defeat

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti described his team as being in a "difficult moment." This came after their 3-0 loss to Norway in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Norway took an early lead with goals from Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa. Martin Odegaard assisted Erling Haaland for a third goal, all before halftime.

Italy has not qualified for the last two World Cups. They currently sit fourth in Group I but have played two fewer games than other teams due to their Nations League participation.

Norway leads the group with nine points. Israel is second with six points, while Estonia is third with three points.

Spalletti stated, "I am the head of this group. I chose this squad and will continue with them." He emphasized the need for improvement, saying they cannot give advantages by losing possession.

Italy captain Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed confusion over the defeat. He said, "Our supporters don't deserve this kind of match." He added that they need to reflect on their performance, calling it "unacceptable."

Italy's next match is against Moldova on Monday. Moldova is at the bottom of their group without any points from two games.

Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia that it was indeed a "difficult moment." He acknowledged worries after such a poor performance and stressed the importance of facing problems head-on.
