Jannik Sinner’s nomination for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award has been withdrawn following his three-month ban due to two positive doping tests almost a year ago.
Sean Fitzpatrick, chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, explained that the decision was made after discussions within the Academy and consideration of Sinner’s ban, which was the result of a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
While the extenuating circumstances were recognized, the ban made Sinner ineligible for the award. Sinner and his team have been informed.
The settlement, announced on February 15, saw WADA reduce a proposed one-year ban for the accidental contamination of Clostebol from a massage. Sinner's ban won't affect his participation in Grand Slam tournaments.
