Kamaldeen Sulemana's Southampton faced the earliest relegation in Premier League history. Tottenham Hotspur secured a comfortable victory, thanks to Brennan Johnson's two goals.
Johnson scored first in the 13th minute. He converted Djed Spence's cut-back. Three minutes before halftime, he flicked in a second goal from James Maddison's header.
Mateus Fernandes scored for Southampton in the 90th minute. However, Mathys Tel added a penalty goal in added time. This ensured Southampton became the first team relegated with seven games left.
A subdued atmosphere filled Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Fans protested against chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou. Spurs had only one win in their last ten home league games.
Despite this, Spurs started strong. Johnson and Lucas Bergvall created problems for Southampton’s defense. Cristian Romero forced goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into a smart save from a corner.
Southampton nearly scored when Kamaldeen Sulemana shot at the far post. Pedro Porro deflected his shot onto the post, keeping Spurs safe.
Spurs quickly responded with Johnson’s opener, easing nerves for the team. Romero was denied again by Ramsdale after another powerful header.
Bergvall thought he had scored next but was ruled offside after a VAR check. Boss Postecoglou showed frustration but smiled when Johnson scored again.
Southampton improved after halftime and controlled possession. Fernandes chest downed Sulemana's cross and fired through Vicario’s legs for a late consolation goal.
Ramsdale made five saves to keep Spurs ahead, including stops from Spence and Dominic Solanke. Tel’s penalty sealed Southampton’s fate after Welington fouled Johnson.
Now rooted at the bottom with 10 points, Saints need two more points to avoid breaking Derby County's record-low tally of 11 from 2007-08.
Spurs' win brought them up to 13th place with 37 points this season.
