Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed condolences to the boxing community. This follows the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju in Ghana.
Gabriel died after a light-heavyweight match against Jon Mbanugu at Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. In a press release dated March 31, 2025, Adams shared his heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Ministry and the Government of Ghana.
He described Gabriel as a talented athlete with great courage. Adams called his untimely death an irreplaceable loss for boxing.
Adams also empathized with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and the global boxing community. He noted that Gabriel’s passing highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport.
While waiting for an official medical report on his death, Adams promised full cooperation with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA). He emphasized the Ministry's commitment to improving athlete safety to prevent future incidents.
The Minister extended thoughts and prayers to Gabriel’s family, friends, and colleagues during this tough time. He urged the global boxing community to unite in honoring Gabriel’s legacy and ensuring athlete wellbeing.
