Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed his condolences. He reached out to the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju's family after his death in Ghana.
Olanrewaju died during a boxing match on Saturday night, March 29, 2025. The bout took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) confirmed his death on Sunday. They stated he was medically cleared to fight.
Ghana's Sports and Recreation Minister also sent condolences to Nigeria's boxing community. This was in response to the tragic incident involving Olanrewaju.
In a related development, Oluremi Aboderin, Secretary-General of NBBC, shared more details. He claimed the boxer initially refused to fight due to financial disagreements.
Aboderin explained that Olanrewaju and his coach were returning to Nigeria when they received a call. The promoters offered to meet their financial demands for the fight in Ghana.
He criticized GBA for allowing Olanrewaju to fight under these circumstances. "The rules state you must weigh in on Thursday," he said. "Fighting two days later is against protocol."
