The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has announced Kofi Asamoah-Okyere as the winner of the 2nd Edition of the Youth Advocacy Challenge.
This quarter’s challenge focused on: “Examine the Impact of Substance Abuse on Youth and Propose Creative Community-Based Solutions.”
Kofi, a 16-year-old second-year science student at Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), stood out among many entries. His innovative approach addressed substance abuse among Ghanaian youth.
His proposal included community-driven strategies to reduce substance abuse. He aims to promote healthier lifestyles, driven by his passion for advocacy and past experiences.
Kofi was also a finalist in the 2024 UBA National Essay Competition. He represented Ghana at the 2025 Harvard World Schools Debate Tournament as part of the National Debate Team.
The Youth Advocacy Challenge is part of the UNICEF-funded Youth Engagement Centre (YEC) project. It provides a platform for young Ghanaians to engage in national discussions.
The initiative encourages creative thinking and empowers youth as agents of change. It aims to cultivate an informed and engaged generation.
Recognition and Opportunities Ahead
Kofi Asamoah-Okyere’s entry was selected after a thorough review by an evaluation panel. He received a GH¢3,000 cash award and national recognition through major media publications.
His achievement highlights the importance of amplifying youth voices on social issues. Angela Osei Gyan, Head of Corporate Affairs at GhLA, commented on his win. She stated that Kofi’s ideas show how youth advocacy can inspire change in communities.
Next Challenge: Focus on Child Protection
Following this success, GhLA announced that the next challenge will focus on Child Protection. Applications will open soon and be advertised on all GhLA social media platforms (@ghanalibraries) and their official website (www.library.gov.gh).
