Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have jointly called for an autonomous Ghana Premier League, arguing that independence from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) would improve governance, attract sponsorships, and enhance professionalism.
Their statement, signed by Kotoko’s IMC Chairman Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awuah and Hearts Board Chairman Togbe Afede XIV, highlights concerns over financial transparency, poor infrastructure, and inconsistent broadcasting deals.
They demand fair TV rights revenue distribution and VAT exemptions on match proceeds.
While the GFA has not yet responded, the proposal has sparked debate, with some supporting commercial growth and others fearing league instability.
With Ghana’s two biggest clubs leading the push, discussions on breaking away from the GFA’s control are expected to intensify in the coming months.
