Kurt Okraku: “The best way to honour the May 9 victims is to prevent another tragedy”

Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku has called for a commitment to fan safety. He believes the best tribute to the victims of the May 9 Stadium Disaster is preventing future tragedies.

Okraku spoke at the 24th anniversary remembrance ceremony on May 9, 2025. He described the 2001 incident as a “harrowing moment in Ghana's sporting history.” He urged stakeholders to turn remembrance into action.

“The best way to honour those we lost is to ensure it never happens again,” he said. He emphasized enhanced infrastructure and robust regulations for fan safety. The GFA is working hard to prevent a repeat of this tragic event.

He highlighted the implementation of Enhanced Safety and Security Protocols by the GFA. These are proactive steps aimed at improving matchday environments. Okraku also praised ongoing upgrades at football venues across the country.

Reflecting on recent events, Okraku expressed sadness over a Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan's death. The fan, known as Pooley, died during violence in Nsoatre. He urged the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations and seek justice.

Okraku was joined by members of the football community, government officials, supporters' groups, and families of victims. Together, they paused to reflect on Ghana’s darkest day in football history.
