Meet five Whiz-kids who shone for Ghana in African Schools football Championship

Ghana's football future is taking shape at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The African Schools Football Championship showcased the U-15 boys and girls teams. The boys are called the “Black Comets,” while the girls are known as the “Black Damsels.”

These names carry deep meaning, reflecting celestial power and royal heritage.

The girls' team, as hosts, won the championship title. However, the boys lost in the semi-finals to defending champions Tanzania.

JoySports’ Joseph Ayinga-Walter highlights five standout players from the Black Comets.

John Andor (Third World FC)
Andor plays for Starri Third World in Division Two. He uses raw power and speed to break defenses. His relentless energy makes him a key player on the wing. He was named Best Player at April’s Montelido Promise Tournament, which Ghana won. At the African Schools Championship, he scored two goals and provided one assist, earning him Ghana’s Best Player title.

Ignatius Hagan (Sandi Football Academy)
Hagan combines finesse with natural striker instincts. He joined the tournament late but made an immediate impact. He scored twice, including a clever finish against Algeria in group play. With intelligent movement and strong aerial ability, he troubled opposing goalkeepers consistently.

Francis Fionyadzi (Kasoa De Youngsters Academy)
Fionyadzi is small but fearless as a right-back. After missing the first game, he excelled in later matches, especially against Tanzania in the semi-finals. His overlapping runs and precise crosses made him a vital player on defense.

Festus Gyamfi (Great Warriors SA)
Gyamfi impressed fans with his performance at the stadium alongside Senegal’s Souleyman Faye. He scored a stunning goal against Algeria that thrilled commentators and spectators alike. His powerful strike blended style with force, making it a highlight of the tournament.
