Michael Essien rejects 'cultural disconnect' claims against under-performing 'foreign born' Black Stars players

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has dismissed claims that "foreign-born" Black Stars players underperform due to cultural disconnect, calling the notion baseless and unfair.

This criticism has been directed at players like Spain-born IƱaki Williams, who has struggled to replicate his club form for Ghana, managing just one goal since his 2022 debut, and Antoine Semenyo, excelling at Bournemouth but underwhelming internationally.

Essien argued such criticisms unfairly blame players instead of addressing deeper team issues.

He warned that negativity could deter other talented players of Ghanaian heritage from joining the national team.

Drawing on his illustrious career, including World Cup appearances and major club successes, Essien advocated for a more inclusive and supportive approach to integrating dual-nationality players into the Black Stars.
