Missing AFCON fuels Black Stars' World Cup ambition - Jerome Opoku

Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku says Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has increased their drive for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points. They are three points ahead of second-placed Comoros. With four matches left, Opoku believes the team's desire to bounce back is strong.

“We have much bigger motivation now,” Opoku told Flashscore. “Missing out on AFCON was a huge disappointment for us and our fans. That setback has made us hungrier to qualify for the World Cup.”

The defender, who played well in Ghana’s win over Madagascar, insists the team is focused on securing a spot at the global event.

“I am 200% confident of qualifying,” he declared. “That’s our goal, and we know it won’t be easy. But we’ve regrouped and are determined to stay on top.”

With four crucial fixtures remaining, the Black Stars aim to turn their frustration into motivation as they pursue redemption on the road to 2026.
