General manager Calvin Booth was also let go. The source spoke to The Associated Press anonymously since the team has not publicly announced these changes.

The Nuggets currently have a record of 47-32 this season. They have three games left but have lost four straight. The team is now in a tight race for home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Last year, Denver won the championship but lost in Game 7 at home to Minnesota in the Western Conference semifinals.

Malone had one of the longest tenures among active NBA coaches. He ranked fourth behind Gregg Popovich, Erik Spoelstra, and Steve Kerr.
