Pat Riley spoke about Jimmy Butler for the first time since his trade. Butler was suspended three times this season by the Heat. He was traded to Golden State in February.
At his end-of-season news conference, Riley wished Butler well. He believes Butler wants good things for Miami too.
Riley acknowledged that Butler's situation impacted the team significantly. “The buck stops with me,” he said. “I’ll take that hit if you want it.”
The Heat declined to offer Butler a two-year, $113 million extension. He faced multiple suspensions and lost joy in playing for Miami. Ultimately, the team had to trade him.
“I’m not going to apologize for saying no on a contract extension,” Riley stated. “And I don’t think I should.”
Riley did not express any lingering hard feelings toward Butler. “It’s over,” he said. He wished Butler good luck and hoped he wishes well for Miami too.
Riley also mentioned that changes are necessary for the team. He does not expect the Heat to keep the same roster next season. The team will pursue trades this summer to improve their lineup.
