Frederick Assor, a two-time Paralympian, has raised concerns about the NPC. He is a former board member of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC). Assor believes the NPC is straying from its core mandate.
Last week, the NPC appointed 38 sports journalists as media administrative officers. This initiative aims to promote para sports in Ghana. While some praise this move for boosting visibility, Assor sees it as a worrying shift.
He stated, "The NPC does not develop sports." Instead, he argues that it implements policies for federations. The NPC's main role is to support federations in preparing athletes for major competitions.
These competitions include the Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games. Assor emphasized that federations are responsible for developing sports and nurturing athletes. The NPC’s involvement should begin when preparing athletes for global events.
Assor questioned the recent appointments by the NPC. He warned that these actions could undermine individual sports federations' autonomy. If the NPC appoints coaches and media officers, what is left for federations?
His comments contribute to ongoing debates within Ghana’s para sports community. These discussions focus on the structure, governance, and long-term vision of the NPC.
