The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has made a strong commitment. He promises to give “200%” to maintain national sports facilities.
Parliament approved 65 million cedis for the Sports Ministry. However, resources for infrastructure upkeep are limited.
Former Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul raised concerns. He stated that “not even 10 million cedis” was allocated for pitch maintenance. He emphasized that “capital injection” is necessary to prevent facility deterioration.
In an interview with JoySports, Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged the resource challenges. He noted that while funds are limited, they remain determined to fulfill their responsibilities.
He said, "Much has not been given but more is expected." He recognizes the challenges ahead and views them positively.
Ampofo Ankrah believes in innovative funding solutions. He mentioned their success during the first game against Chad as an example.
He expressed excitement about his role and assured commitment: "We will give 200%. We need to double our efforts."
Renting out national stadiums has become a key income source for the NSA. However, this practice often leaves facilities in poor condition.
In July 2024, Baba Yara Stadium was rented for a five-day church program. This event damaged the pitch before Ghana's match against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
As a result, CAF revoked the stadium’s license to host international matches.
