Officials invited and questioned on 2023 African Games ‘scandal’ – President Mahama

President John Mahama announced that officials have been questioned about the 2023 African Games scandal.

He shared this information during a briefing on his first 120 days of social contract with Ghanaians.

The Games took place in Accra in March 2024. They faced allegations of financial mismanagement and potential corruption. Reports suggest $245 million was spent on the event.

An extra $15 million was used for feeding athletes and officials. Additionally, $4.5 million went to the games management system and accreditation tags.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of good governance and accountability. He stated, “We are committed to tackling corruption and eliminating waste.”

He promised to start inquiries and forensic audits into key public interest matters. “This war against corruption continues unabated,” he added.

Several officials have been invited for questioning regarding the 13th African Games.

In April, former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was interrogated by the National Investigation Bureau. It remains unclear if this questioning related to the African Games spending.
