Olanrewaju might've collapsed, died of 'a cardiac arrest or an underlying medical condition': Ringside physician

Ringside physician Dr. Edward Asante has spoken about the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju fought Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on March 30, 2025. The match took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. In the third round, Olanrewaju suddenly lost balance and collapsed onto the ropes.

Dr. Asante quickly entered the ring to help. He removed Olanrewaju's gum shield and provided emergency care. Unfortunately, he and his medical team could not revive him.

"It was shocking how he collapsed; there was no punch involved," Dr. Asante told Daily Graphic. He added, "We did our best, but tragically, we lost him."

Olanrewaju was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arriving at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital by ambulance. Dr. Asante suggested it could have been a cardiac arrest or an unknown medical condition. Only Olanrewaju's family or close associates might know more about this issue.
