Osibisa’s Teddy Osei laid to rest

Pallbearers carried the remains of Teddy Osei.

The legendary musician was known for his role in Osibisa. He was laid to rest after a viewing and funeral rites. These took place at his family home in Chiriapatre, Kumasi, on April 5, 2025.

A burial mass followed at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica. Family, friends, and loved ones gathered to mourn and celebrate his life.

Teddy Osei was born Francis Kwabena Osei on December 17, 1935. He was a talented saxophonist, drummer, and vocalist from Ghana. Osei founded Osibisa in 1969, an iconic Afro-pop band.

Osibisa produced timeless hits like "Woyaya" (1971). The song features the famous lyrics: "We are going... Heaven knows where we’re going... We know we will." Other hits include "Sunshine Day" and "Dance The Body Music."

Teddy Osei is survived by three daughters: Matilda, Agnes, and Shanta. He also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Benedicta Adu-Poku paid tribute to her late husband. She said, “Today, I pay a glorious tribute to my dear husband.”

She quoted the Book of Romans about enduring love despite loss. “Your song—We are going—continues to echo in my heart,” she added.

Benedicta shared that Teddy’s busy music career never weakened their family bond. “If not on tour, he always made time for me,” she recalled.

She cherished those precious moments together. “I will carry your love with me always until we meet again,” she concluded solemnly.
