Former Minister of Youth and Sports Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has argued that Ghana's boxing legends deserve statues more than outgoing President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
Speaking in Parliament during a discussion on the late Clement Ike Quartey, he emphasized that figures like Ike Quartey Sr., Eddie Blay, and Prince Amartey should be honored with monuments.
He criticized the lack of recognition for these icons, saying, "By this time, we should have monuments to remember the future generations of the exploits of Ike Quartey Sr., Eddie Blay, Prince Amartey and the rest."
He added that instead of Akufo-Addo’s statue at Effia-Nkwanta, “Eddie Blay’s statue... will inspire people to achieve something.” Vanderpuye has long advocated for honoring Ghana’s sports legends.
