Southampton made Premier League history for the wrong reasons. They suffered the earliest relegation after losing 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. Brennan Johnson scored twice in the first half. Mathys Tel added a late penalty, sealing Southampton's fate. They will return to the Championship with seven games left.
Johnson opened the scoring in the 13th minute. He converted Djed Spence's low cross. Three minutes before halftime, he scored again from a James Maddison header. Mateus Fernandes scored for Southampton in the 90th minute. However, Tel's penalty ensured their relegation.
The match took place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The atmosphere was subdued as fans expressed frustration with chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou. Spurs quickly found their rhythm, with Johnson and Lucas Bergvall challenging Southampton’s defense. Southampton had chances too, including Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot that hit the post.
Tottenham's win moved them up to 13th place in the table. Meanwhile, Southampton remains at the bottom with just 10 points. They now face a challenge to avoid setting a record for fewest points in Premier League history.
