Prof Raymond Atuguba: The visionary who transformed UG Law School

The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) is undergoing a significant transformation. This change is led by Professor Raymond Atuguba, the current Dean.

Under his leadership, UGSoL has become a leader in legal education in Ghana. The school has seen growth in research, institutional development, and international partnerships.

A senior faculty member praised Professor Atuguba’s revolutionary leadership. They noted that his vision expanded the student body and faculty strength significantly.

UGSoL's student population has increased from 600 to over 2,000. Graduate students now make up the majority. The academic staff has also grown from 20 to about 150 members.

This includes 35 full-time faculty members and nearly 100 guest lecturers worldwide. Professor Atuguba emphasizes that legal education must evolve for national and global needs.

This philosophy led to an increase in academic programs from six to 41. UGSoL is now a leading hub for research and training. The school also strengthened its administration with 153 staff across specialized units.

UGSoL's success in postgraduate education is notable. Over 2,000 master’s students have graduated since the program began. The school is preparing to welcome its fifth cohort of PhD students.

These scholars will help fill gaps in legal academia and public agencies. UGSoL's global influence has increased as well.

The institution now has over 50 international partnerships with prestigious universities like Harvard Law School and Columbia Law School. About 200 students and faculty have participated in international exchange programs.

Professor Atuguba insists that excellence is the standard at UGSoL. Nearly all graduates last year passed the Ghana School of Law entrance exams, highlighting rigorous training.

In research, UGSoL is making significant progress with six research centers being developed. Three centers are already launched: the Democratic Vigilance Programme, Ocean Governance Programme, and Africa Programme on Data Governance and Digital Rights.

These centers address pressing legal issues today. The most ambitious project underway is a $25 million Multi-Purpose Building Complex.

Once completed, this facility will enhance legal education, research, and innovation at UGSoL. As they honor Professor Atuguba, his impact on the school is clear.

His vision and dedication have transformed UGSoL into a powerhouse of legal education. A student leader remarked that his legacy will be felt for generations to come.

Today, UGSoL celebrates not just a leader but an institution-builder and transformative force in academia.
