'Providing adequate security will make the GPL attractive and profitable' - Nick Owusu

Nick Owusu, Vice Chairman of the GFA Security Committee, has called for enhanced security in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) to attract both fans and corporate sponsors.

His remarks come in the wake of the tragic violence during the GPL match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko, where Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, known as 'Nana Pooley', was fatally stabbed.

Owusu emphasized that proper security is crucial for the safety of spectators, which in turn boosts attendance and attracts corporate investment.

He also pointed out the lack of formal sports policing training in Ghana, which limits the effectiveness of security officers.

Following the incident, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak issued a joint statement urging the GFA to improve security at league venues. The GFA has postponed match-day 20, and the league's resumption date is yet to be announced.
