Egypt's Pyramids FC are the champions of African club football. They defeated South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League final. The final score was 3-2 on aggregate.
In the second leg, played at 30 June Stadium, Pyramids won 2-1. This victory secured their first continental trophy.
The final was competitive throughout both legs. In the first half of the second leg, Sundowns controlled most of the possession. However, Pyramids used tactical flexibility to take the lead.
A direct pass found striker Fiston Mayele. He set up Ahmed Atef for a cross into Sundowns' penalty area. Defender Grant Kekana's clearance went straight to Mayele, who scored with a perfect finish.
Sundowns faced more frustration just before halftime. Tashreeq Matthews had a one-on-one chance but was denied by Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy.
In the 56th minute, Pyramids right back Mohamed Chibi delivered a free kick. Ahmed Samy headed it past Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams after a VAR review confirmed he was onside.
After this goal, Pyramids focused on defending their lead. However, they made a mistake that allowed Sundowns to apply pressure. Iqraam Rayners scored for Sundowns in the 75th minute from eight yards out.
This left Sundowns only one goal away from leading on away goals. They continued to attack but faced strong resistance from Pyramids' defense and El Shenawy.
Pyramids also attempted counter-attacks to keep Sundowns honest. A lengthy ten minutes of stoppage time added suspense but Pyramids held on for victory.
This win marks a significant achievement for Pyramids FC after years of big spending and disappointment. They finally gained recognition in African club football.
Now, Sundowns will focus on the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. They will begin play in Group F against Ulsan HD on June 17, followed by matches against Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense.
