Tom Ilube has resigned as Rugby Football Union (RFU) chairman amid growing backlash over the scale of executive bonuses, which led to a potential vote of no-confidence.
Appointed in August 2021, Ilube faced increasing pressure from grassroots clubs due to the RFU's financial management.
He is the sole permanent member of the RFU’s remuneration committee, responsible for high executive salaries.
The RFU's latest financial report showed CEO Bill Sweeney earned £1.1 million, despite record losses, partly due to a 2021 incentive plan.
Ilube announced his decision to step down to avoid distractions from the game but will assist in the transition.
Bill Beaumont, former World Rugby chair, is rumored to be considered for an interim role.
