Kylian Mbappe has won the European Golden Shoe for the first time. He scored twice in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday. The France international netted 31 league goals in his debut season in Spain. This achievement also earned him La Liga's top scorer prize.
Mbappe secured the top spot with his final game double. He finished ahead of Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres, who scored 39 goals. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah followed with 29 goals. Gyokeres had eight more league goals than Mbappe but ranked second due to a points system.
In this system, goals from Europe's top five leagues are worth two points. Goals from leagues ranked sixth to 22nd are worth 1.5 points. Mohamed Salah needed a hat-trick against Crystal Palace to tie with Mbappe. Instead, he scored once in a 1-1 draw.
Mbappe is only the third Real player to win this award. Hugo Sanchez won it in the 1989-90 season, and Cristiano Ronaldo won it three times: 2010-11, 2013-14, and 2014-15.
Gyokeres has been linked with a summer move to Arsenal. However, he could not catch Mbappe since Sporting's league campaign ended earlier. After scoring in the Portuguese Cup final against Benfica, Gyokeres finished with 53 goals in all competitions.
The top five players in the rankings were as follows:
1. Kylian Mbappe (62 points)
2. Victor Gyokeres (58.5)
3. Mohamed Salah (58)
4. Robert Lewandowski (54)
5. Harry Kane (52).
