The President of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC), Mr. Samson Deen, visited Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. Mr. Ankrah is the new Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA). This meeting took place at the NSA headquarters.
The purpose was to promote cooperation for disability sports in Ghana. Ghana will host two major para sports events in November 2025: the AfPC Elective Congress and the Open Para Sports and Classification Festival.
Mr. Deen emphasized Ghana’s important role in advancing para sports in Africa. He pointed out the need for inclusive facilities and athlete development. He also mentioned that access to athlete classification is crucial.
He stated, “Africa’s para athletes are talented but structurally underserved.” Hosting a continental classification festival will create opportunities and address historic inequalities.
The upcoming festival will provide international classification for athletes. This classification is necessary for competing in global Paralympic events. Mr. Deen noted that international classifiers and delegations are already engaged.
Support has come from diplomatic missions, including the Spanish Embassy. Mr. Deen shared how para sports have transformed since he became involved in 2016. The focus has shifted from individuals to community empowerment.
He requested access to venues like Borteyman Complex and University of Ghana Stadium. He also asked for technical personnel to help with logistics for the festival.
In response, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged full support from his office. He stated, “This is a national priority.” The NSA is committed to providing facilities and manpower for success.
The collaboration between AfPC and NSA marks a significant step forward in Ghana's sports diplomacy. It aims to empower athletes with disabilities across Africa.
