In a recent meeting, Mr. Samson Deen visited Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. Mr. Deen is the President of the African Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Paralympic Committee. The meeting took place at the National Sports Authority (NSA) headquarters.
This engagement aims to boost cooperation for disability sports in Ghana. It marks a new era ahead of two major para sports events in November 2025. These events are the AfPC Elective Congress and the Open Para Sports and Classification Festival.
Mr. Deen emphasized Ghana's important role in advancing para sports in Africa. He highlighted the need for inclusive facilities and athlete development. Access to athlete classification across the continent is also crucial.
He stated, “Africa’s para athletes are talented but structurally underserved.” Hosting a continental classification festival will create opportunities and address historic inequalities.
The upcoming festival will provide international classification for athletes. This classification is necessary for competing in global Paralympic events. International classifiers and delegations from various countries are already engaged, with support from diplomatic missions like the Spanish Embassy.
Mr. Deen shared his insights on how para sports have transformed since 2016. He noted a shift from personality-driven systems to fairer, community-focused structures. “This movement is no longer about individuals,” he said.
He requested access to key venues like Borteyman Complex and University of Ghana Stadium. He also asked for technical personnel to assist with logistics for the festival.
In response, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged full support from his office. He stated, “This is a national priority.” The NSA is committed to ensuring that para sports thrive by providing necessary facilities and manpower.
