World number one Jannik Sinner started his French Open campaign with a win. He defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets: 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.
This was Sinner's first Grand Slam match since a three-month doping ban. The match took place on Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris.
The score does not reflect the challenge he faced. Sinner had to recover from a double break down in the third set against Rinderknech.
This victory marked Sinner's return after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Italian Open final. "First-round matches are never easy," he said. "I'm happy with how I handled it."
Earlier on Monday, world number four Taylor Fritz lost to Daniel Altmaier in the first round. This made Fritz the highest-ranked player to exit this year's tournament.
Sinner saved three early break points in a tense opening set. He won the first set after Rinderknech made errors while serving.
In the second set, Sinner broke serve and maintained control, dropping only one point on serve. However, he struggled in the third set as Rinderknech took an early lead.
Sinner quickly regained his composure and fought back against Rinderknech's break points. He then pressured his opponent and secured victory with a strong serve.
Next, Sinner will face Richard Gasquet in the second round. Gasquet is playing his final tournament at Roland Garros and won his opening match against Terence Atmane.
Sinner won his third major title at the Australian Open earlier this year but has not reached a final at Roland Garros yet. Last year, he lost in the semi-finals to Alcaraz.
In February, Sinner accepted a three-month ban after two positive drug tests last year. His suspension ended earlier this month, allowing him to compete again.
Taylor Fritz struggled during his match against Altmaier, losing 12 of the last 16 games. This defeat means Fritz will drop below Britain's Jack Draper in rankings.
Fritz reached last year's US Open final but has struggled this season on clay courts. "I’m playing horrendous tennis on important points," he admitted.
Altmaier achieved a significant career win by defeating Fritz and will face Czech player Vit Kopriva next round. He broke Fritz's serve three times during their match.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced easily by beating Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Casper Ruud also progressed without issues against Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Holger Rune came back to defeat Roberto Bautista Agut after losing the first set. Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced by beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry as well.
Francisco Cerundolo was eliminated by Gabriel Diallo of Canada in straight sets: 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
